Hi, I'm new here and I have a comment about this topic...

I'm very hesitant to download in fear that I will get stoned to death or something if I don't have anything to offer! I'm a hobbyist who plays guitar, but I also like sounds in general, and I'd like to have the sounds on my computer just for the enjoyment of them! And even when I make songs (which is very rarely) I only ever show this one friend I have, I don't post or publish them anywhere. If I used one of the samples I would attribute the creators in the comments of the file, that's fine, but I don't want to have to post my song online, I'm not into that. I could upload the song onto one of those file servers like megaupload and send a link via email to the creator of the sample so that he/she can hear if he/she would like, that's fine I'd do that, but I don't want to have to like go onto a mixter or whatever type site and be a public musician/artist or whatever, I do this stuff mainly just privately and with my friend for shites and giggles! So if this is a problem then I will gladly leave and just forget about it, but if it's not a problem then maybe I will be brave and try to download something and look both ways to make sure there's no stones coming!

I can understand the frustration of the bot scripts downloading the whole site, but people like me are not greedy. Actually you wanna know what greed is? Greed is when you make something, and EXPECT something in return! Which is exactly what some of you are suggesting like Timbre! If people would do everything out of the kindness of their heart for free on this earth, and not expect or need or want anything in return, there would be no need for money, and there would be no recesssions or any other problems related to having a currency/credit/money system. My type personality, I'm not the typical "I want to be famous, I want to be noticed, I want tons of attention, I want everyone to hear my work!" etc., I'm almost the opposite, I'm a very private person, so that's not greed. And I did say I would at least show any creations (if I ever even make any!) to the creator, so that should be good enough, and if it isn't, then... MAAN, just forget it! I'd rather be somewhere where people have more kindness and not an "ok I gave, now what do you have to give back?" attitude! I love without requiring love back. And for my enemies, I love not the unrighteous deeds they do, but I love them as a person for they are imperfect. And if I ever contributed something here I would not require or request anyone to do anything nice back for me. I'll decide whether I should stay and download, or run a million miles away based on feedback. Thanks.

Welcome to freesound. Download whatever you want "just for the enjoyment of them". If you have nothing to upload, there is nothing wrong with that, no-one will censure you. This thread is more of a dig at people who probably download thousands of samples and then sell them on.

Thank you, I'm assuming you're one of the moderators? I guess I'll try to download... I have a feeling it won't work though, I use Firefox and I read somewhere on the forums that downloads don't work right now with Firefox? Any news on that issue? I'd hate to have to fire up Internet Explorer again, I haven't used that in like a year, but I will if I have to I guess. Anyway thanks for clearing up the confusion I had about how the site works, I guess I'll stay after all! If I (and I might not ever, but, if I do!...) ever use anything I'll attribute in the comments of the file and on any web pages if I post them there, and I'll send a download link to the creator of the sample so they can hear.

Ah...so it's not meaningless then!? Theft at least demands a great deal of purpose...if this is true i take some comfort in it.

The above is written not because i support theft but there is an enviromental issue here.I don't know how much energy is needed to cool the google search-engine for example(i can't find a link),but it must be enormous.

Dear Everdream! I upload samples there to enjoy when someone use it I have downloaded a few and used maybe 5 or 6 samples. So if i mostly upload there must be persons who download without any uploads - that's idea of Freesound. It's OK when they use it, but some users try to collect and sell samples. Many of users didn't read license and use it in commercial purpose. Some of uploaders like me give wider permission to use it in commercial or official music project and art purposes - but in advertising it's not fair to use it. Why some people can make money stealing someone elses work - that's greed and i understand anyone's anger when hearing their sound in radio advertisement for example. I don't bother of crediting my name or sth - i'm pleased when user informs or write sth - it's very kind.

I'll take your advice and offer to settle my bar bill by offering pay the barmaid with "love",
although I think it will result in me getting my face slapped, and I will still have to pay the bill.

LOL, Ahh... what I meant to say was "If EVERYONE would do everything..." so yeah, it would only work if everyone did it, and that's what I meant... but nope, people can't just give without wanting something back always! And yeah I guess you're not technically greedy, but is it ever possible to just give without wanting something back? It's not greed, but it's not an attitude I'm too particularly fond of. The way I like to be is, I give without asking for anything back, and I leave it up to the other person's conscience to when and whether they should do something nice back for me. And then when someone does, I know that they are doing it on their own and not because I'm making them feel like they have to, and I enjoy that feeling more. But whatever! I guess not everyone can be that way unfortunately.

You should not call people who have no uploaded any files "zero-contributors." They have contributed to the community by being the downloader. What kind of community would this be if there were no downloaders and just uploaders? A pretty crappy one.

I think the OP is missing the point of this community and this thread and his ideology are harmful to it.

i.e. Satishbhawra38 does not agree with my suggestion that a contribution of samples, (or funds), would be appropriate for those who have downloaded 1000+ samples, but have yet to contribute anything.

Hello im new here, im from brazil, so sorry if my english is not the most polished and sharp, well i discovered this site and i found some magnificent sounds here, i can really say that im amazed with the quality you guys put on recording the sounds, and the variety. I felt bad when i read the percentage, and the fact that i havent contributed with the database. Actualy it is not my strong point to work and develop sounds.
I was in need of sound for a little video im doing for my university, so i dont really have any comercial purposes, and the idea of a database of sounds made by users made me happy, and then when i heard some of the sounds, i was blown away.
I wanna say im sorry that i dont have the talent to help increase the database, but i can really say thank you to all of you that let other use such outstanding sounds for free. I really apreciate and admire the work you all do, losing some time of your days, to record, polish and then publish to others, without expecting something back but one thank. Well i thank you all so much really!!

For me, the whole idea behind Creative Commons is to have a pool of works you can dive into when you need something you can't make yourself, to use in a greater work you do make yourself. And there is no issue whatsoever with people downloading sounds from here when they're using them in a video or song or game or whatever, that's exactly why this is here. And it can only exist because people are using the sounds. In return, you can contribute sounds, if you can, or else you give the world another new creative work. So we all benefit.
The only problem is when people take the sounds and set up a website of their own, offering the exact same sounds. That is no added value. But as long as a user is downloading sounds for a new project and not for redistribution, I say they're free to download a thousand samples if they so desire without contributing other sounds.

Yeah that is indeed an issue, people trying to take one great project as this one, and try to make a website on its own, cause that is a lack of respect, and not recognize the wonderful work that occurs here. The credit need to go to freesoundproject.com, cause thats the true good ideology of helping others, and the work done exceptionally great.
Not only the sounds, the site estructure, the idea of a preview before you download, thats just genious!
Hope you guys get more and more recognition from everyone, cause it is well deserved!

daviash, your enthusiasm and gratitude is already a great contribution to FS
I believe that, in a collaborative environment like Freesound, feelings are important: to thank and quote Fs and authors of sounds is more than respecting license agreement, it's a precious social value.
(...my recorder is malfunctioning, thus I'm actually taking more than giving... thanks Freesound!)
