cajoBram* university policy does not alow us to do this.
but it allows you to sell Tshirts and receive donations.what do you think about this:
- if you upload then you can download (even not 1 to 1, i.e. you upload 1 then download 5 or 10)
- if you buy a Tshirt or make a donation then you'll have a number of samples to download
- if you upload no samples (and make no donation nor buy a Tshirt) then you can't download - maybe only a few samples.the goal is to improve users' activity and donations - it should sounds not like "to pay for samples" but "to contribute to the community". many users never upload a sample, only download: I have no points against such users, "Free" is a main concept to me - but "energy balance" too, you give then you take, "sharing" is a two way activity. users which upload could go on without thinking about money. and sometime the community could offer interesting packs to everybody.
I understand that upload-download management is a complex task which asks for resources in time and people - hard to do but not impossible, revenues could pay back the efforts.I anyway like the idea of more banners of sites technically and thematically related to FreeSound
You could consider selling a special rank? Ex. Super Member forum rank for $10 and it gives you extended privileges of some sort?
mkoenigdobroide
Hasn¡t anybody suggested giving the whole database to Google for their new service, Googlesounds? hock:(Its a joke)
This site gets indexed so fast if you google Googlesounds this page shows up .lol
Oh my god, I believed you were kidding but its true !!! (??) I ask 'Google Sounds' to Google and it sends back to this post!!! Are you listening Google? This was MY idea!!

my point of view is more ethical than mathematical: why so many users only take and never give?
I think that if one contributes to FreeSound then he'll have to take more from FreeSound - it sounds fair!
if non-contributing users are mainly little producers they should have some original samples to share, or could afford a donation, even a little one.
dunno, it was just an idea
(I'm not expert of net business, nor I'm selling stuff on the net, neither expert of net communities: please forgive my naivete)
The problem with demanding users to give their own samples is it really hurts the popularity of a site to begin with. And donations of money can mean a lot more than sounds anyway. One would hope that someone who benefits significantly from the site would give something back.
It would be nice if this site could survive on mostly good intentions.
That petition idea or letter writing idea to someone to support it sounds like a great idea.
I would rather see some sort of reasonable ad solution to keep it freeish than restrictive demands on new users.
Yes, I've given very little back but in time I intend to get off my ass and give back more once I determine what I'm comfortable with giving away.
Demanding uploads from people downloading will increase the mount of useless samples, an increase the amount of illegal samples for us moderators to go through. So, that's a no-no. We've been there before
Freesound is FREE for now, and it's not set to change in the future. Maybe we'll still try making money off things like google ads as this doesn't really stop us from being all free, but it is ugly and kind of impedes our freeness in other senses (even if just psycologically).
By the way mkoenig, I moderated some of your files to "illegal" as I wasn't sure you created those files yourself (and because they had free-loops.com in the filename), so I assumed they were taken from free-loops without thinking about the license. Please be clearer in your descriptions when uploading files in the future.

So I would have to download 5,500 or 11,000 files? What would I do with Jovicas bleeps of various lengths and all the glitching binary bursts?
NoiseCollector

lmao
maybe we could have like 3 downloads for the start, the we have to upload three other samples before we can download as much as we want?
thanks Bram for the clear answer - and to keep this site working

I wouln't mind if there was an ad or 2 a page - as this site is great
I think some great progress was made when people were encouraged to rate or better yet comment on a sound - it sorta got me back into coming here..
but this site is good - but for me it feels like a double edge sword.... makes it easier for people with no sounds to get sounds - DOH! that's my business going away.... well perhaps or maybe it's a way to meet other audio heads? am I alone in sonically insanity? perhaps not?
It does feel nice to share - i sorta work on the upload a few when I d/load a few principal..
I actually wrote to a few people who had download pretty much the whole database and asked them what selfish people they were..
I got a couple of replies - 1 guy was in prison!!! which I guess is pretty tuff -
but how come this thing is in barcelona? I went there last year after visiting the UK - must say it was much warmer and the food was great ! had the best paella ever at a little town whiclst driving to barcelona
unfortuantely I didnt have md with me...
would love to go back again - isn't there a massive audio fest there every year?
