maybe this score would be good?

Yea, I like that score.
I'd like to get them all laughing and then wander through the crowd at varius speeds with the mic.
I'd also like to get some sound of utter disbelief like whoa, or oooo, but with inflection.
Could we syncronize a cheek pop?
I've done improvising of sounds in smaller groups of 20, and that should get quite interesting with 300. Everyone does a sound or a tone and then gets entrained into the flow of the group. Some wild things can happen as the sounds change over time.
I've recorded a lot of walla (or loop groups) over the years and I have some ideas about the recording process.
300 people can make some great sound textures for long recordings where the beginnings and ends of the sounds aren't too important.
BUT - most of the time, it's really nice to have good natural beginnings and ends to sounds, so make sure that you have a conductor and that all 300 people can see the conductor.
There was a suggestion above to have a "ssshhhYAH" sound. I think it would be best to record them as separate sounds. Then you have three sounds: "ssshhh" "YAH" and by combining them when you edit to picture "ssshhYAH".
I would love to see (hear):
- laughter (kind of funny)
- laughter (medium funny)
- laughter (hysterically funny)
- laughter (that starts funny, and then goes to not quite so funny, and ends like it's not funny).
- yawning (that's really hard to find)
- snoring (I'll second that request)
And of course it's good to get some variation in duration too... a short, medium, and long version of each is good for a library. I realise this makes it grow to a very large list - but does that answer your questions?
Matt
ps. how are you going to stop that smart-ass who's always going to yell "D'oh!" at the top of his lungs at the end of a recording when everyone was just doing something quiet?
There was a Joseph Beuys recording where he simply said 'Ja, ja, ja....Ne, ne, ne.....' in kind of a bored monotone, and a chorus behind him repeated it. It had a nice contrast in all sorts of ways. (I think it's at ubu.com)
Perhaps if the 300 people were lined up whispering or squawking or something - maybe in a spiral shape line - and recorded with binaural mikes on a long boom there might be an interesting scape.
Or how about getting everyone to murmur, in whatever languages, 'I want (fill in the blank)' as the mike travels through the crowd.
I still would like to hear recordings of intestinal noises. Nothing really gross, no burps etc. just stomach rumblings. A crowd of that noise might say something about the state of the planet these days. And I'd really like to know how that could be recorded live.
My two cents.
I'd like to have 300 people whistling.
Start sparse, and get more intense over 5 mintues.
Whisteling as though they were communicating in a hidden code - a few call and response to begin, and when safety has been established a chorus of whistling chatter!
...maybe...
intrigued!
My recommendation for recording a group going SSHHH, is to record a Portuguese Fado performance.
I don't think the audience is there so much for the singer, but they enjoy the hell out of shusshing anyone who's talking. They pounce on talking like a starving dog on a accidentally dropped sandwich.
a small update: today we are recording video with a small group: we're going through a schedule with sounds we made up. The video of the small group will be used as a backup for the speakerman at the main event...
Wish us luck!!
