Hello!

Sorry if this is off-topic, but I'm having trouble finding a solution to my problem.

I run a small sample website (modularsamples.com), the vast majority of the content on it is free, licensed as public domain. However, I have one product that I charge for and I would like to find the most appropriate license for it.

I would like end users to be able to use the samples freely in any musical context, but obviously I don't want people people distributing the samples as they are without my permission. This rules out any of the Creative commons licenses, as they don't allow us to specify what a work can be used for.

Can anyone suggest a license that would apply in this case?

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I'm referring to a specific set of samples I have created. I want to distribute these samples commercially, but I'm unsure about the best way to license them.

You may not distribute the sounds either in native format or reformatted, filtered, re-synthesized or otherwise edited, for use as sounds, multi-sounds, samples, multi-samples of as programs or patches in a sampler, sample playback unit, website or computer. The sounds cannot be used as source playback from ROM or chip sets or embedded in any chip set.

You may not distribute, sell, rent, lease, sub-license, assign, or otherwise transfer any of the sounds except as incorporated in a production. You may not distribute the sounds in native format or in any format which could be construed as competitive. This license expressly forbids resale, re licensing or other distribution of these sounds either as they exist, or any modification thereof. You cannot sell, loan, rent, lease, assign or transfer all or any of the enclosed sounds to another user, or for use in any competitive product.

Thanks for the advice! The license you posted seems to cover it, I'll see about adapting it for my own needs.

Sorry if my request seems inappropriate, I see your point, however it's one of the few places I have found that covers legal questions regarding sample content. I'm really am big supporter of free samples, I offer over 30gb of public domain content on my site and I'm looking into putting together something specifically for the Freesound project.
