Hi
I recently made an abstract short film and used a couple of sound effects from freesound which I integrated into the soundtrack.
I have credited The Free Sound project as well as the authors of the sounds.
This film has been self-funded and I am looking to send it to festivals. But, under the CC license, is it possible to send it to festivals which have competitions with cash prizes? Or would that make it commercial use?
I discovered that 'Children of men' used a sound effect from your site. How did this work out in the contract as this is, I assume, it is a commercial film.
Any help on understanding how this works would be much appreciated.
Hi, I'm not a lawyer, but I see no problem with your film being in competitions. The way I interpret the "commercial" aspect is for example downloading all the thunderstorm sounds here and creating then selling a relaxation cd of those sounds. Or if you create a commercial to sell something unrelated to the sounds you use. It is definitely a bit confusing and if you are really worried about it I would suggest sending a note to the people you used sounds from and ask if they have a problem with this use.
Good luck!
