Scenario: I create a song. In that song I use a Creative Commons Sample. That sample is something non-musical, an ambient sound for example. When I release the music I attribute the sample to its creator. Now I want to protect my work. So can I copyright a song that makes use of a creative commons licensed sample in it?

I hope that's clear and understandable. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You for asking this Question, I also wanted to know the answer as I like a few sound recordings on this site..in fact there are heaps i LOVE here (@ FREESOUND) lol. But I've also Created Alot of my own songs and sounds and want to know if I create a little Jingle or Sample or Song with a background noise..and GIVE Credit to the Creator of Background Noise etc..can I still protect my Work,.that I have created,..if i choose to? You will find most of the users on this site very co-operative in regards to sharing their material. I am currently working on a new release and have received permission to use material from several users.
This project is less complicated, as it is being released not for profit. Still plan on some kind of licensing of the 3rd party material. From a lawyers point of view . . . . if it isn't written down, it didn't happen.
