I am a bit confused on this, and have not found a thread that addresses this directly, so forgive me if there is one already.
The CC license says "No Derivative Works. You may not alter, transform, or build upon this work." But the sticky FAQ's first question "Can I use freesound samples in my game/song/website/film/etc?" answers "Yes! As long as you properly attribute the sample, you may reproduce, remix, and incorporate the sample into your work any way you like." Maybe I am not understanding what "build upon" means in the license. Isn't what the FAQ describes "building upon"? :?:
I want to make a YouTube video or two of me playing my instrument with some Freesound percussion samples looping in the background. I wouldn't be modifying the samples in anyway, nor is this a commercial project. I have written the creator of the samples and am awaiting a response, but in the meantime, am I able to use them in the way?
Yeah, that does sound confusing - but if you contact the creator and get permission, then you can do anything you agree to do with the samples despite what the license says.
I see now that there are different CC licenses, and that the one Freesound uses allows what I want to do. Cool! I intend to use it a lot, as my group folded and I am now solo.
