I understand that if I download and use a sound in a work of my own, it's only right and decent that I give credit to the generous soul who uploaded the sound.
BUT...
If I manipulate that sound so much that it is barely recognizable from the original upload, should I still credit the uploader? Is it possible that I could alter the sound in such a way that the uploader wouldn’t like it and would not want to be associated with it…?
Well, if the sound licence includes the BY clause, attribution must be given even if your manipulation goes very far from the original; after all you started from it, even if the listener would never recognize the source.
As for the uploader not liking your alteration, well, if they didn't inlcude the ND clause (No Derivatives) they're allowing any kind of alteration; so unless you read on their profile something like "please don't turn my sounds into the verse of hyenas because I hate them with a passion" you should be safe Anyway, you can always try to contact the author whenever you have such a concern, but should you get no response at all, you can act according to the licence alone.
Credits ("attribution" part) are not dependent on what modifications you do; they depend on what you use as a source for these modifications.

I use them for silly videos I make like this: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Child-Unit-Charlie-405492282
Don't worry, your questions are not stupid at all, actually they are key questions!
If you go to the site homepage, http://www.freesound.org/
you'll see the random sound of the day; its layout is quite compact, like the sounds presented in a search result.
Under the number of downloads and comments, you'll see some icons, and the grey circled one(s) on the right indicate the license; if you hover on them with the mouse, a more descriptive tooltip will appear.
If you go to the page of the sound, like this, http://www.freesound.org/people/quartertone/sounds/142663/
below the download button you'll find a description of the chosen license which also links to the official page of the license.
By the way, when you search sounds here, you may restrict your search to sounds that match a license of your choice.
HTH
BTW - is there a way to add "OR" for searching, so that searches for multiple types at once? And not only licences, ORing for all parameters.
