Hello, I just need a bit of a reality check on something.
A Soundcloud user has uploaded one of my recordings to their page and not correctly attributed it. It is this sound - http://www.freesound.org/people/spoonbender/sounds/244942/ and here is where they have uploaded it - https://soundcloud.com/ronan-thompson-4/244942-spoonbender-wind-through-trees-3b
I left a message on their upload and also sent them a private message asking that they attribute it correctly or take it down. I guess it's just a kid who doesn't understand how to follow the CC attribution license correctly and they probably don't go on Soundcloud very often. So, I don't want to be a jerk and report them to Soundcloud for copyright infringement etc, I'd much prefer to give them a chance to do the right thing. But, if they don't fix things or reply, I'm not sure I will have any other option.
Has anyone gone through this process with Soundcloud? If you did, how did it work out? There are all sorts of scary agreements that you have to tick relating to costs etc when you report someone!
Or, am I being over the top about it? Should I just let it slide? (Hence the reality check request).
Hello,
he surely acted in good faith. A malicious user wouldn't have mentioned Freesound at all, and would have changed the sound name before uploading or at least the link, since it mentions you and the sound ID.
Most people just aren't aware of licensing issues, I second reasonable approaches and giving chances to fix any issues before declaring war
Cheers copyc4t,
(He did change the name..)
But I guess he knew he should do something hence mentioning freesound.org, and he's not taking credit etc..
Ay caramba.. It's still slightly frustrating. That sound took me an entire day of climbing trees!
By not changing name I meant that he uploaded the file as is, so SC automatically created the link you see, which includes sound ID and your username: 244942-spoonbender-wind-through-trees-3b
Definitely not a malicious sneaky move, as he could have always changed the SC link via edit as an afterthought; your frustration is understandable, but I see no reasons against a happy ending for your case
