Hi,
I'm a bit stuck on knowing what I can allow people to download. my problem is with recordings made in potentially private places. For exapmle if your're on a london underground train and record the voice saying "Mind the gap", is that a copyrighted voice and are you allowed to enable people to download it and use it. And what about if you record the sounds in a cafe, a museum or a shopping centre? These feel like public places but are they?
I'd be grateful if anyone could advise me on this.
Recording trivial recorded messages in public is quite a vague copyright area. However, Freesound does admit sounds that fit the description of your examples: see http://freesound.org/people/impy4ever/sounds/47276/ (Romanian underground train).
On the other hand, cafés, museums and shopping centres are all public places and as far as copyright is concerned recording there would be no different from taking a photograph. I have my own recording of the inside of a pub: http://freesound.org/people/jamesabdulrahman/sounds/241096/.
While I am not a lawyer, I think that the examples you give are fine and dandy for uploading to Freesound. Spread the audio love!
@jamesabdulrahman Thanks for taking the time to reply James. That's very helpful, thank you.
Technically the "mind the gap" recording is copyrighted. But it belongs to TFL a government organisation, so personal recordings made of this will be public domain I assume.
Only if you were to create your own transport system and use the same recording would it be against the law.

Anyway, corny jokes aside, thank you very much for your help. Very useful info!

Probably a bit late, but anyways:
I've uploaded a large-ish pack of London Underground sounds to freesound (http://freesound.org/people/kwahmah_02/packs/16351/ , more sounds are to be uploaded, including a mind the gap )
And that features some of the live and pre-recorded announcements heard on the network.
They were moderated with no problem, so I'm sure you won't either.
Only I'm white listed now which means my sounds go straight onto the website now!
You should to be fine...
Here's one of my own examples from the pack... No problems.
