Some time ago i went for a walk in a forest near where i live. As my dog and i walked in an area with lots of ant activity it hit me, how about recording the sound of ants. Well i've been thinking about it for a while now, but haven't come to actually do something about, yet. Perhaps it's a bit weird, but why not?

So i thought about asking in here.. what's the weirdest recording you ever thought of?

Well there is this windblown tree that leans on another tree and if the wind is strong enough and from the right direction, as they rub each other they groan and creak in this mournful way.......

I don't think it is weird.

.....i reckon weird mostly comes unexpected while i'm recording something else!

Ah i know what you mean.. i even think i cut down a tree recently, which did made that sound just like that :wink:

Actually, the recording of the sounds of insects is a very interesting activity.
We all know about crickets and bumblebee sounds... I would be more interested in the sounds of the insects that we think make no sound!
There are certainly sounds outside our normal range of hearing (ultrassounds) to be heard there.

I remember watching a program by David Attenborough, "Life in the undergrowth", which was basically about insects.
I remember they used pecial techniques and special microphones to record insect sounds. But I do not know what type these microphones were.

It said something like "at the insect scale an and can feel more than hear the sounds next to it" I interpret that to mean that the sounds are so tiny that they disperse extremely quickly: the sound of an ant footstep only exists ithin a tiny space, smaller than the ant itself, before its vibrations completely disperse in the air...
Not sure if my undertanding is correct...

Ahh and erm.... almost forgot to mention my strange recording ideas...

I love contact mics... Clip them to something and you can pickup sounds that you did not even know existed!
They can pickup very tiny sounds within solid materials that don't "make it out".
Water flowing through pipes or vibrations on lamp posts could be good examples.

Not exactly in the pure "sound" category, but... a pickup coil (or any other type of coil) connected to a suitble amplifier or recorder will transform electromagnetic noise from varied sources into interesting sounds.
