Hi
We're students from THE GERMAN FILM SCHOOL (www.filmschool.de) in Germany. We're searching for a SFX-specialist to score our new CGI-Film “Biosteam”. The film has a length of 3min30 without credits. Music will be done by Justin R. Durban (www.edgen.com), he scored some parts for trailer2 of “Harry Potter Trailer – and the order of the phoenix".
For a little snapshot of “Biosteam” please visit the links below

Plot:
In the 19th century during the industrialization, employees were upgraded and changed with tools to optimize their workflow in the factory. Now, mankind is differently, everyone looks for himself to survive. Our main character “FB” is searching for an object he needs to survive. Unfortunately it’s an object from another character called ”MMW”, who isn’t pleased at all, that someone bothers him in his district. So “MMW” starts to chase “FB” in the dark tunnel system …
You can see that this will be a very fast action short, with a lot of SFX. If you are interested please contact me by mail:

I will send you the entire animatic. Deadline for our project is 24th February.
Because this is a student project, we can't pay you for your work. We will mention you in the credits and you will receive a film version which you can stream on your website. You will also receive a movie DVD.
Best regards
Yves
Well i've been wanting for a while to do some sound design for someone elses work. I wouldn't call myself a specialist but i think i'm pretty good. How extensive do you want the sound to be. Do you need dialoge or will you do that, and do you want just sound effects, or some foley too.
Thanks
First of all let me say that the links reveal some absolutely brilliant stuff - the 3D work is on a par with really expensive pro studios. The main character turntable just knocked me flat. You must have some serious rendering power there but of course you need the artwork to be great before the technology and it is just that - great.
It sounds like you have got the right calibre of person doing the music too which is good as you deserve it. It is therefore essential you get the sfx right too as I am sure you will. It is not clear from your post exactly what you need and your timescales are pretty tight. I think that a lot of freesounders would like to help but, like me, are amateur enthusiasts and maybe a little daunted by taking on the while task without knowing more about what is needed. Also a lot of things may already be here somewhere in the archive and just need tweaking. So I would suggest that you give us more of an idea of specific needs - you might find that a number of people would meet your request in different ways and therefore share the thing. Just a thought.
But I really do hope you get what you need and I for one would love to help in whatever small way.
Thank you for your compliments ERH, it's good to hear feedbacks and it supports us if we hear compliments like yours. I know that the timescales ar pretty tight.
Actually we're working about 15-16h a day to be able to finish this project, it means, that we're still doing animation, while others have begun with VFX an lighting. This is also a problem for the sfx, that the very final entire animatic will be finished close to the deadline. I'm able to send nearly every day newest versions of the animatic, that step by step will come to the final movie.
A problem is, that or university needs the exclusive rights for the entire work, that means also for the sfx. But as I wrote, we aren't able to pay someone for his work. We will mention him in the credits and he can stream the film on his website.
Now about the SFX and Foleys, there will be a lot of steam, sparks, metal- and stonecrashing, vibratingnoises from objects, woodcrashing... a lot of things.
I hope, i didn't scare someone with the postet images and videos. We are students from the 3rd term an looking for someone who is able to do sfx. I have to say, that you and Gridiron are the only one who did a feedback. We are becoming Digital-Artists and not sfx-specialists. So we would be very excited if someone will help us.
Sorry for not replying to your private message.
what do you mean exactly with foley?
Foley effects are sound effects added to the film during post production (after the shooting stops). They include sounds such as footsteps, clothes rustling, crockery clinking, paper folding, doors opening and slamming, punches hitting, glass breaking, etc. etc.
are foley noises?
Yes
if that's the case, whats the different between sfx and foleys?
The difference as you can see, sound effects or also called physcal effects are the explosions, electricity, fire, jets, cars things like this.
have you got a homepage, where we can listen to your work?
No, sorry like i said i'm no specialist. I've kinda got forced into sound design. Like you i'm an animator but I do 2d animation. When i started learning more about animation I realized that the sound is just as important as the animation so what i did is I got a sound editing program call Sonar. I started collecting sounds to created a library. And basiclly i learned by doing. I'd download cool scenes from movies and started practicing on them, putting sounds in and creating sounds to fit these scenes. And I did this so I learn how to do the sound on my films. So thats basically my only experience with sound.
I also have some questions I will ask in my next reply
I realized It could be difficult for me to finish the sound under the alloted time you've provided. Expecially with the film not being done. And I would hate to start doing the sound and not finish in your alotted time.
Are your animatics the final animation. As in are you not going to add any more motions or movements to it afterwards? And i ask this because film animatics are completly different from the final product. And this could be a problem because if I get all the sound done for the animatic and some of the movements are different in the final, the sound could be out of sync.
Also about how far are you into the project? In other words what percent is done animation wise?
Thanks
I would like to join ERH in the congratulations - It looks very professional.
I am a Sound Designer and would love to work on this, the problem is that I am currently busy on several other projects and the time scale is far too short.
Best of luck in finding someone!
Angel
thanks Gridiron for you explications for sfx and foley, i heard the word foley for the first time and while searching for translation to german i couldn't see whats the different by sfx and foleys. so now i know that we need sfx and foleys.
this short cut out which you can watch, are final animation, there will be no change in those shots. I would say that in our actual animatic over 60% of animation are final. The action shots are almost completed.
our goal is to finish animation in the next 2weeks. At this time the first final scenes will be done, scenes with vfx and lighting. so day by day the animatic will come to the final movie version and you can see more details for foley and sfx. because in the final animation a lot of details are still missing. steam and sparks are done with fluids and have to be simulated, so you can't see those informations in our animatic so far.
It doesn't mean that exactly. because allready 60% of animation is done, there's allready enough informations to start now, but yes, most of the informations will come in the next 2 weeks. but as i said, we hope to be finished in 2 weeks with animation. that means that the last final scenes with vfx will come some days later. it is a pretty tight timescale, i know.
a lot of sfx and foley will be the same, it woun't change very much in the different shots and can be repeated.
hello everyone
after two months and a lot of sleepless nights we finally finished the short biosteam some weeks ago. to watch it, use following link:
