FreeSound is an amazing site, I should like to recommend another (free) which covers not just sound effects, loops etc but also original music, poetry, books - sounds of all kinds.
Come and join us and upload any of your amazing sounds for the benefit of our members:
www.soundlantern.com
for the moment MP3 and WAV but other formats available soon
- and carry on the real serious stuff here!
- the Sound Lantern Team
except sound lantern is (already) full of illegal sounds and songs, and there is NO license on display for the usage of the sounds on the site (so legal usage isn't really possible).
not really any comparison to freesound...

Bram. I thought my post gave due credit to Freesound. The two sites are very different, but there may be some members who wish to post on SoundLantern.
So far as copyright issues are concerned we have this among other things displayed on the site:
"6. Your User Submissions and Conduct
A. As a Sound Lantern account holder you may submit audio content ("Sounds" and textual content ("User Comments". Sounds and User Comments are collectively referred to as "User Submissions". You understand that whether or not such User Submissions are published, Sound Lantern does not guarantee any confidentiality with respect to any User Submissions.
B. You shall be solely responsible for your own User Submissions and the consequences of posting or publishing them. In connection with User Submissions, you affirm, represent, and/or warrant that: you own or have the necessary licenses, rights, consents, and permissions to use and authorize Sound Lantern to use all patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other proprietary rights in and to any and all User Submissions to enable inclusion and use of the User Submissions in the manner contemplated by the Website and these Terms of Service.
C. For clarity, you retain all of your ownership rights in your User Submissions. However, by submitting User Submissions to Sound Lantern, you hereby grant Sound Lantern a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sub-licenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the Sound Lantern Website and Sound Lantern's (and its successors' and affiliates') business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Sound Lantern Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each user of the Sound Lantern Website a non-exclusive license to access your User Submissions through the Website, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such User Submissions as permitted through the functionality of the Website and under these Terms of Service. The above licenses granted by you in Sounds terminate within a commercially reasonable time after you remove or delete your Sounds from the Sound Lantern Service. You understand and agree, however, that Sound Lantern may retain, but not display, distribute, or perform, server copies of User Submissions that have been removed or deleted. The above licenses granted by you in User Comments are perpetual and irrevocable.
D. In connection with User Submissions, you further agree that you will not submit material that is copyrighted, protected by trade secret or otherwise subject to third party proprietary rights, including privacy and publicity rights, unless you are the owner of such rights or have permission from their rightful owner to post the material and to grant Sound Lantern all of the license rights granted herein. "
- in other words:
1) posters retain their own copyright
2) we do not encourage posting of copyrighted material by others than the holders (ie your members, if they wish to upload sounds they have created)
There may be some copyright material on the site, perhaps uploaded for tests or by overenthusiastic new posters. We are working to remove this
best
Jim,
Sound Lantern team
No thanks ... I like it right HERE!
Yea but as far as I know people don't go to soundlantern and make freesound accounts and post about how great freesound is. I mean they managed to draw me in just fine without posting in any forums other than their own...
and I'm going to have to agree with sanus I love it here at freesound... Home sweet home...
