Julianna Barwick does some great stuff layering her own voice into to complex and multi-layered ambient chorales--this video is from a visit to Iceland where she recorded children's voices and then added them to her work-

When you said layering own voice, immediately Fredo VIola came to mind (I just noticed, btw, that Julianna's layering has so many artifacts, it's amazing! Almost synthetic ping pong pads very subtly heard).
