I downloaded (.wav) drum samples uploaded by robbiesurp, but I couldn't get the WMPlayer to recognize the file type (Error message C00D109B, One or more codecs required could not be found.) While it has no trouble playing other .wav samples downloaded from freesound (such as musicbox samples uploaded by eliasheuninck.) I got the same error message when I tried playing an M-Audio ProSessions DVDROM, someone had loaned me. I used free software called Gspot (codec identification) that indicated no codec is required, which doesn't make sense to me, and it classifies the codec type as "PCM Audio". I was unable to find any such codec on the web to download. I don't currently have my own computer so I don't use any musician/ DJ type software, only external samplers for percussion and texture in my music (boss sp-505, korg ESX-1). So my only strategies for sampling from freesound.com are either computer headphone/speaker directly from sample preview (which adds ALOT of line noise and is kills the attack/ decay aspects of certain samples) or, preferably, burning freesound samples on WMPlayer and sampling from a CD player via optical S/P DIF and RCA or 1/4 line out.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what me or this computer is missing (file type discrepencies, etc.) or, knows someone who might and have a moment to forward this message or respond, I would really appreciate it.
I solved the problem using audacity. I'm not sure how to go about converting 24 bit to 16 bit.
I assume the bit rate conversion is programed into audacity.
Thank you for your suggestion.

Edit: I mean black inverted *triangle*, sorry
Thanks, I'll try that. For my original purpose I doesn't seem I need to convert it to 16 bit but then again I haven't tried burning the files yet.
On another topic, I have an MDS-JE500 I use to transfer 80 min. MD's via S/P DIF (which un fortunately skips sometimes.) I've up graded to an MZ-NHF800 from my older portable MD recorder. The MDS-JE500 of course won't recognize HiMD. Do you know if Sony or anyone makes MD players that can transfer HiMD opticaly?

No. Only Sony make HiMD at this point, and they don't offer that feature.
However, the good news is you can transfer your recording bit perfect in less than real time to your PC using the USB connection on your player and Sony's SonicStage application, which will convert these to WAV for you as well if you want.
These sites have more info on HiMD

but what you won't be able to do is transfer your old MD recordings that way. To do that, provided they were not recorded vie the optical input, you need a Sony MZ RH-1
