Hi all,
I have been looking at options for recording spaces with my fostex fr2-le and would like to try out an omni-directional stereo setup.
Any ideas? Mics such as the DPA 4060 and Sony 77b look ideal but are somewhat out of my price range right now.
I've been interested in the soundman binaural mics for awhile as well, a set up using an xlr adaptor is a possibility.
Cheers,
Miles.
You could check out the Shure MX183 which is significantly cheaper, but a really good mic. It is also quite a bit larger than the 4060, but it's still small enough to be discrete.

Yeah they look pretty good.
I find myself overwhelmed by the choice, but am weary of making an impulsive buy just because I want to get out there and record asap!
Has anyone experience with www.homemademicrophones.com? The omni mic looks pretty good, just wondering if the pdf is worth $7.
That is based off of the Schoeps preamp. Schematics for that have been floating around for some time. There is a Yahoo! group called Mic Builders, the schematic can be found there IIRC. It's probably worth the 7 bucks to have it all in one place. I think there a few variations floating around-- it would be nice to have one that you know works, along with the part numbers. I've never heard the mic in person, but it has a good reputation.

If you are at all looking at DPA, then disregard what I am about to say, but I have had good results from cheap measurement mics such as these two:
Behringer ECM8000: http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/ECM8000.aspx
Apex 220: http://www.apexelectronics.com/products.asp?id=83&cat=2&type=1 (This one is much smaller physically than the Behringer)
Or: http://www.apexelectronics.com/products.asp?type=2&cat=22&id=79
I have so far used these in spaced omni (A-B) as a part of a Mid-Side arrangement and Jecklin disc usages. I dont believe I have anything on Freesound specifically because it was mostly used for bagpipe recitals and other musical events.
You wont find a cheaper way to experiment with the omni patterns, but I realize it isnt all about being cheap. I have much more expensive multipattern omni mics, but if I am out in the wild, I almost always take these instead.
The Behringer looks good.
How do the behringer and apex mics you linked measure up in quiet environments?
