Consider using a denoiser. I don't know if there are good free denoisers.
I heard Audacity has a denoiser inside, but I'm not sure it's a good one.
I have one called BIAS SoundSoap, it's not free but it's simple and works fine. I know there are other famous denoisers from steinberg, voxengo, from the wave diamond vst plugins pack...
Or maybe if the sounds you want are not too rich, just try to put some filters on the sound. What kind of sounds is it actually ?
Oh, and since you have a mac, there is that huge (and expensive) soft, audiosculpt, I don't know exactly how far you could go with it as I'm working on pc, but it seems to be one of the most able to isolate parts of the sound. Unfortunately, there is no free erzats to it, (or maybe I just don't know it).
