i've got some sounds: dialogue and breathing etc... i want to approximate the sound of it being inside a small metal box like a coffin or a bottle-bank. any ideas on how to do this?
field recording is not an option as i already have the sounds...
i'm using adobe audition.
thanks for your help!
There is a very versatile and sophisticated software program called Speakerphone made by a Dutch company called Audio Ease that simulates various acoustic environments using impulse responses, of course it costs a lot of money (ca. $400-$500 I think). However, there are many other IR reverb programs that offer similar abilities, some are freeware, and one can download many free impulse responses from the net.
Best of luck!

Most sound editors can do something like this, but it probably won't be as straight-forward as a filter that says "inside a metal box". Many people use Audacity -- I use GoldWave. Both are available for free downloads from a variety of places on the web. Look through the filters, try a bunch, play with the settings and see what works for you. On GoldWave, I think some sort of combination of the "Reverb" filter with perhaps the "Mechanize" filter may do the job for you.
you could try using delay with very short delay times. Sometimes that can make the audio sound like it's coming from inside a tube. You could also try convolution reverb. Convolve your audio with maybe the sound of a pan being struck. The metalic qualities of the pan should be imparted to your audio. You will need to experiment with the impulse response you use and the wet dry settings in particular but that should get you in the general area where you want to be.
there is a site with a donationware collection of impulses collected from inside bins and buckets etc but I'm afraid I forget the address. Sound files you have on your computer or can download from here should suffice though. You want something with a short ring to it. Hope this helps.
