Hi everyone,
I'm ready to release my game, just need some unit voices. Basically, I can record them myself. But I need some sound effect, and I don't know very well about sound effect.
These voices are for vehicle (tank) unit, maybe throught the radio. I have heard voices of units in many games, and I love the Red Alert 3's ones (Guardian Tank and Cryo Copter). They are somehow cartoonish and soft-male-voice.
Can you please tell me how to do it, since there're a lot of voices, and I don't like to request such enormous work on freesound. Can I do that with Cool Record Edit Deluxe? If not, please give me a good program (free is good, but paid program is still OK).
Thank you.
For the game VegaStrike, the current SVN version offers radioed audio messages for some factions; the user named Turbo started it and did some experiments with filters to achieve the radio effect, you can do the same using Audacity and applying the chain of filters and effects listed here.
You don't even need a good quality microphone, as the chain of effects will degrade the sound, I recorded my lines (I'm CLoneWolf there) with the cheapest headset ever *flees from the horde of righteously angered sound professionals*
You're welcome
You are probably using the stable version of Audacity; the 1.3 beta version (>= 1.3.7, I have the 1.3.13) has a Pitch Shift effect, in the Effects menu; you can use it to change the pitch up or down while keeping the original speed.
Happy experimenting!
No, I know how to change pitch , but I don't know which parameters should I apply. Maybe I should post the sound file, so you can help. Thanks in advanced

And can you help me add some noise?

Oh wait... vehicles... maybe you're referring to noises from the vehicles the speaking persons are in?
You can import multiple audio files, apply volume changes, filters and effects separately, align them at will, play them together and export the whole mix; in this sample I've overlaid the previous one to this sound by pempi.
I had simply searched for vehicle, but you might issue more specific searches for your particular needs; setting the minimum sound duration (available in the advanced search) will help you filter out effects like screeching brakes, too recognizable (why does the Jeep pilot always brake so hard when he talks to me? ) or anyway too short to cover the length of the speeches you need them for.
Thank you very much. The noise is OK now.
But I still failed with the pitch change No matter how I tried, the effect always gone too far! Well, please look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZN1CS6OIUM , at about 0:29, there're many voices like "Enemy machine down", ... . Do I really need a pitch change, or other effect?
Thank you for your replies, they're very helpful
Thanks for your appreciation
I don't think you really need a pitch change; each voice has its natural range pitch and is able to convey different meanings by putting emotions in what it says.
The real difference I hear between your sample and the "Enemy machine down" and "Come on!" in the video is that the video character is in action so his mood is high in a mix of excitement for his success and constant awareness of danger; that doesn't mean of course yelling all the time, notice in fact how his "Sustained heavy damage", despite the bad news it is, is said in a quite controlled and not panicky way, but rather professional.
So I think you can simply imagine yourself in those situations while recording, and you'll see that your voice will adapt and sound different; if you need "fatigued" voices and you find yourself not good enough at faking it, you could actually do a little physical workout right before recording, and then your breathing will be natural and credible.
Happy acting!
P.S.: another difference I noticed is the "weight" of the radio effect, the video sounds more "radioed", and in VegaStrike we achieved that by issuing 2 consequent passes of high and low filters instead of one, as mentioned in the wiki ("if desired, repeat the click removal, filters, and leveller again"
Credited? Why, thanks! As for the name, copyc4t will be fine, thank you
