For an art project in September I want to use prerecorded voices to modulate prerecorded underwater sounds. A sound friend told me that a vocoder would be the solution. I've been looking into this, I use Logic Express 9 but the vocoder there is useless for this purpose. There isn't (as always) money in the project to get new software. Does anybody have suggestions? I've been searching this forum for vocoders. but the free ones for mac is outdated :x So I'll appreciate any suggestion, also other than the vocoder.

Plain old Amplitude Modulation ? ... http://www.freesound.org/packsViewSingle.php?id=7695
or Frequency Modulation ?
Another thing you could try is convolution. You can probably find a free convolution reverb plugin and use a short-ish snippet of underwater sound as the 'impulse response', or alternatively use SoundHack since you're on a mac. http://www.soundhack.com/freeware.php
@timbre, nice sample! Can you also 'get rid' of the voice totally so that only the prosodic elements are audible? if you know what I mean. And then of course I don't have the slightest idea how you did it In theory yes, but what software or hardware did you use?
@xinaesthete I totally forgot about soundhack, only that is for me real trial and error, I've just been trying a little and will try some more later.

If so then you need an envelope follower , (which is a lot simpler than a vocoder or AM or FM)

Do you mean just applying the envelope of the voice to the other sound, like this chimera http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=41727If so then you need an envelope follower , (which is a lot simpler than a vocoder or AM or FM)
Thanks for being so helpful - and for introducing me to auditory chimera. I think this might do what I'm after. But then again, how to do it?
I found this: http://research.meei.harvard.edu/chimera/More.html Do you know this?
Thanks again.

I am now experimenting with this vocoder http://kunz.corrupt.ch/products/tal-vocoder which seems to be doing what I want
