Hello Freesound, thank you for all the wonderful sounds out there! Right now I'm hoping I can tap this forum for some assistance/advice/general knowledge.
I recently switched over to Ubuntu, and hoped to be able to keep my copy of Ableton, mostly for the Sampler/Simpler tool which let me take sounds and make instruments from them that I could manipulate through a USB/Midi keyboard. For whatever reason this has not worked. Tried WINE, emulators and the like but just can't seem to find a good solution. I don't want to have to dual boot Windows just to use one program, and I don't really need the rest of Ableton's functionality.
I guess what I'm looking for is a sampler that adjusts pitch kind of like a Mellotron by proportionally slowing down/speeding up the samples and allows for some basic editing (though I can do much of that in Audacity) and can be operated with an external keyboard.
Any help in finding one will be greatly appreciated, as it feels like I've lost an instrument I was just starting to enjoy using.
Hello,
you've got quite a few alternatives to handle sampling on Linux:
Composite is a work in progress but sounds quite interesting;
specimen is very simple to use; it has a successor,
petri-foo which is currently only available in Oneiric Ocelot.
QSampler a GUI for LinuxSampler.
sooperlooper is live performance oriented.
Search these names in your Ubuntu Software Center, check them and their project homepages to pick those that best suit your needs, enjoy
I agree with copyc4t!
For future searches you should take a look at www.osalt.com for Open Source ALTernatives.
By the way, perhaps you should also have a look at http://jackaudio.org i you want to go realtime, it opens up all kinds of possibilities. Just remember to have the realtime linux kernel installed too.
I had a bit of trouble at some point, setting up the whole audio thing, but people over at www.linuxmusicians.com are really helpful if you ask, and knows just about anything there is
