This combination of gear is on my shopping list and has been for 18 months. I am currently borrowing my friends H4n and he also has the same mic I want however, he claims it won't connect? Is it a simple cable choice to remedy this? What do I need to get?

I have a Rode shotgun connected to my H4. I have the NTG2 which can be powered either by a AA-battery or from the H4.
I have a converter cable from the mic's XLR to the external stereo input of the Zoom. It is wired to send the same mono signal to both left and right channel. To use the stereo input I have to use a battery in the mic.

Mostly I just connect the Rode with a standard XLR-cable to one of the XLR sockets at the bottom of the H4. Then I make sure I have changed the Input settings (in the H4 menu) to PHANTOM +48.
No battery needed.
Usually I also set the MONO MIX to ON (Input settings).

I have some other mic's too that need external power (phantom). I haven't had any problem with any of them using the above settings.

Forget The Zoom. Noisy Preamps like hell !
Go and get something better. I was really unhappy with my Zoom h4n and external microphones. Especially while recording in the field and quite objects. The preamps really had some high and loud hiss.
I´m searching a long time now for a good recorder. And i was reading a lot. Go and check out the fostex fr 2 le or the fr 2. Tascam HDp2 should also be good.

I think, i will go and get the Tascam dr 680.

Ah Sorry. put your xlr in the first input of the Zoom, and switch to mono in the sys.pref. Don´t record on both channels. You don´t need the double data. if recording the same on both channels. Record mono and safe space on your sd card.

I can't say that I have had any issues with my Zoom H4 and external mikes - even with quiet stuff (only Rode mikes - NTG2, M3 and NT1A) but I guess it depends on your definition of quiet

Yes, you´re right. I have a lot of high frequency hiss on my recordings. Especially this is notiable on fielrecordings, where there is nearly nothing happening or something like roomtones. other recorders are hissy, too, but it´s in an deeper frequency range, so not that noticable

If you can hear, there´s a hughe amount of high frequency hiss in the recording.
