VST Central is an organized search engine for VST plugins that work for all different operating systems (Windows, Mac, etc) and can work in loads of different music programs (FL Studios, Cubase, etc).
The site includes VST's for effects, and synthesizers, and more. I've found a lot of good VSTs on there for making ambient pads, drones, strings, drums, bass, and a lot more.
I discovered this site a while back when I didn't even know what a VST was, I started learning how to add them into FL Studios and then my music just exploded...so many new sounds came alive with all the different synths and effects i got.
Not all of them are free, but most of them are. If you type "free" into the search bar every free VST will come up.
Here are some of the best VST's I've found...
http://www.tweakbench.com/ritual : Analog bass synth
http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/download.html : Pad, ambient synth (a lot of CPU usage though)
http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=1 : Phase effect (made by Bram
 )
http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=3 : Distortion effect (also made by Bram)
is one of my favorites...
they have a CRAZY good search: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php

Thanks for the link DJC - very comprehensive. I also love Greenoak Crystal - it was one of the first of many free synths I have accumulated but still one of the best. However, although I never knowingly use an unchanged preset, the bundled presets do not do it justice and only when you spend time with it do you realise the depth of sound mangling it provides and I learned a lot form trying to understand how its complex tools manipulate sounds. Brilliant.
DJ ChronosI discovered this site a while back when I didn't even know what a VST was, I started learning how to add them into FL Studios and then my music just exploded...so many new sounds came alive with all the different synths and effects i got.
How do You add them to FL? I have been trying different stuff now.. dont seem to work.. can you show me to a Website tutorial or something like that?
Thanks for telling, Chronos
Drop the .dll file into the folder C:/Program Files/Fruity loops/Plugins/VST
and then open up Fl Studios. Click the Add button and select channel, then select More
At the bottom there should be a little button that says "Scan" and it's recommended you do a Fast Scan.
The new plugins will show up in red, so click the little check mark next to them and you're ready to add it in and start using it.
For effect plugins it's different, open the little FX box and click Add Effect, the select more and scan (if you haven't already) and click the check mark.
You can't add effects in as channels so you shouldn't add them in from the More Channels box or else they won't work.
I found this site not to long ago while searching for some VST. http://www.blackstrobe.co.uk-vst.html They have many links to diffrent sites. Not all are free but it's worth looking at. Infact that where i found that Crystal VST.
[that link is broken!]
it should be http://www.blackstrobe.co.uk/vst.html
nice sites!
Yes there is virtual midi keyboard (free, google it), but you need midi yoke to plug it in any software (also free).
As far as trackers go, I realy enjoy using MadTracker(.org)
