Hi, I'm new in this forum, very wonderfull project!
Sorry but my english isn't very very good, anyway I like Frresound!
I don't understand what's a flac file and how can I convert a flac file in wave file??????
Somebody could help me please????
flac is a no sound loss format. its something like an mp3 format BUT BETTER. many people use it here because..well they can (that's really the only reason but wait a day and someone will tell you other wise).
you can convert it pretty easily. i forgot who it is but one of the guys here has a site and bunch info and links on how to convert it. like i said give it a day and he'll post all that info here.
he's good about that.

flac is just a zipped WAV, this saves lots of bandwidth when either me or Freesound move the (often heavy) files for you. There *is* a way to use flac under a number of OS, just search sourceforge.net for FLAC.
For FLAC codec:
#1 - http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html
#2 - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FLAC.htm
#3 - http://cyberial.com/flacinstaller.asp
#4 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC (for info)
Ya!!!
oops, it seems flac is not the only annoying/weird/ lossless format: http://www.wavpack.com/

Yes, there exists also a wavpack format which is lossless and comparable in compression to Flac. Wavelab form Steinberg includes this format as standard an several plugins for e.g. winamp and nero exist. I wonder if Freesound would accept this format, because it can also convert 32 bit files, which flac does not accept. Bram, could you give your opinion? Thanks!

Bram doesn't like the idea very much: http://www.freesound.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3537

Hey can somebody explain to me how do you setup flac (VB Coded) frontend to work when in winx64 v.7? ops:
I don't know how for flac, but wavpack is supported by some major audio hosts (like Cool Edit aka Adobe Audition, or Steinberg Wavelab), which means you can directly open it without recompressing it. Plus - less CPU usage for rockbox slower/older hardware players, to mention some iriver units here (yet in the age of ipods it does not matters anyway now). For everything else - there is no signifficant difference between various lossless formats (except slight compression factor), because everything is supported by winamp, foobar and ffdshow based players and sound editors. Wavpack however, as a codec - has one confusing thing for beginners - it has also lossy mode inside (which can be good for certain types of sound around 200kbps, sometimes - but only sometimes - even better than musepack). Yet lossless wavpack is very good for storing all kind of FS stuff, at least to my opinion. By the way - for converting between popular formats - you can use dbpoweramp (find via google) - is pretty handy software, that integrates with windows shell (context menu). Basic converter (don't forget download plugins) is free.
FLAC is a loseless audio format I link it with foobar2000.
It is quite popular right now and I cannot see what is wrong with it.
I found FLAC pretty decent with quality from 500kbps to about 1000kbps
pretty easy to work with also.
