im looking for a keyboard-based standalone sampler geared toward live performance. i am using soundplant, but i really want one that wont just trigger samples but will allow me to play the file while the key is depressed and then stop playing the file when i release the key, like a real keyboard. does this exist for either windows or mac? i appreciate it.

I've not tried this one myself (I use Kontakt) but I've heard that this is meant to be one of the best free samplers:

If you read this thread on kvraudio it explains for beginners how to load the samples (although a more in-depth manual comes with the sampler):
