just started using audacity and when I tranfer an audio file from my computer to audacity, the song does not play correctly; it plays really quick and is distorted... is it anything to do with the format of the audio file? any one have a clue? cheers

It's probably to do with the sample rate. Here's a brief tutorial on how to fix that:

Everything at the recording studio was done at 44100 I think.

I use Audio Cleaner for analog transfers. I'm wondering if Audacity will capture the transfer at 24/48000 and play it back at that rate?
Audio Cleaner seems to not allow 24/48 in Windows XP but will do it in Windows 2000....Wierd!

Yes, Audacity will do 16 bit, 24 bit, and 32 bit float, and better than 48000 if you want it, provided your soundcard allows for it.
