Hi,
Just purchased a portable recorder and now looking for (low-noise) decent mic.
The kinds of recordings would include mostly Foley/Field, my goal is to build a sound library
for use for film/video.
I was looking at the Rode-NT4, seems like a good mic, but the price is getting a bit to high, and I would be
using a pre-amp (portable), working on a budget here!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
ps any suggestions on a (low-noise) pre-amp would be great too!
Thanks!
Mengus
Hi,

Mengus, if your recorder has mini-jack mic/line input you could consider a pair of binaurals. Will save you money and give you a lot of fun - with or without a preamp.
saludos
I am in the same boat. The options I have looked at so far are:
Rode NTG 2 Shotgun Microphone
Audio-Technica AT835B Shotgun Microphone
I am leaning more towards the Rode. It is powered by 48v Phantom or an internal AA in the capsule. Are you trying to capture as much of the ambience with the sound source or do you want the just the sound with as little background noise as possile?
THANKS!
I was considering the binaurals, then decided, after using a (cheap) stereo mic, I would want to isolate the sound source and have little background noise.
Then started looking into Shot-gun Mics, Audio-Tech. AT835b in specific so far. I guess my main concern would be that the mic has a very low noise floor and can pick up detail + clarity, I realize this type of mic may be $$$$, maybe a pre-amp would minimize mic noise level on a reasonably priced mic?
In summary, the sounds I record indoors/outdoors are to build a sound library for post-production without breaking the bank!
I had this thought the other day to find a facility that "rent's out" this type of equipment to help me decide in this endless search!
I will check out the Rode NTG 2! thanks for the link!
thanks again!
