Back on Mission Blvd. and the beach with my Zoom H4 and the special dust mask blimp ... ... I just uploaded new recordings of the traffic and the waves. The dust mask worked perfectly. Because it holds its shape over the "clown nose" foam windscreen, it provides dead air spaces on all sides of the built-in mics. Even the part touching the foam windscreen has ridges and air spaces. I'm no engineer, but I think the results are a big improvement over the recordings made on the same spots a month ago.

That's the solution that I have been pursuing with the tea strainers!
I'll post my effort here when I finish.
Great minds, etc.

has anyone tried a thick sock?
Nice idea. A thick or thin sock (even stocking) stretched over some frame would work. It's all about a dead-air space between the mic and the wind. If the wind velocity is too high then you need some shock-absorbing (fluffy material)...all as transparent to sound as possible.
BTW: I purchased (on the recommendation of a fellow freesounder) one of those inexpensive blimps from 'Cine City' ( http://www.thecinecity.com/ or eBay for http://stores.ebay.com.au/DV-Shop23 if their site with it's incorrect security-certificates scares you)...the blimp-basket is a bit flimsy compared to the Rycote/K-Tek blimps (the suspension and handle is fine)...but as I am the only (careful) user it's more than good enough, I am suspending a NT4 in it. I doubled up on the suspension rubbers as the NT4 is a heavy mic (easy to do as it shipped with about 50 spares in a pack)...

The dust mask blimp is no match for the Santa Ana winds. We drove out of San Diego County's firestorms Monday. I actually saw the great smoke plume to the south of Interstate Highway 8. It was like what you would expect from a great bomb blast, a huge column of roiling gray and white smoke towering into the sky. Anyway, we stopped at a reststop in Buckman Springs. The wind blowing at hurricane strength without the rain. The restrooms were full of leaves and dirt. I tried to record the trees' racket, but got nothing but wind noise. No surprise, I suppose. Incidentally, my car, parked in a San Diego hotel lot overnight, was covered with soot this morning, and the air smelled of burning wood all night long and the next day. hock:
