:?: Basically, I'm a guitar player at heart but I'm stuck at home with no cable for my electric guitar which makes me sad and bored.
I wanna make music on my laptop to keep me entertained but i have no idea what i'm doing? Any general starter tips/links/samples etc would be great.
THANKS!!!
Hi
I'm a guitar player too.
If you take a look to the web you can easy found music software freeware or payment,it's up to you.
if you like old style electronic music you can download rebirth (propellerhead) now they give for free (2 tb303-1 tr808 - 1 tr909) it's a great software.
For my peronal use I prefear Orion (synapse audio) It's a great underrated software, for me it's the best,it's give to you everithing to startrum machine, sampler, synths, effects, audio tracks, vst support and rewire and it's chep respect Reason or fruity loop.
Let's have al ook to Acid express (free) at sony music.

You should be able to plug your guitar straight into your laptops mic/line inputs (you will need an adapter cable) and record yourself jamming straight into http://audacity.sourceforge.net (free).
You can also load loops and music in Audacity and jam over the top.
Once you move beyond that then there are many many ways you can go, the KVR reference is a good one...

love imagine line products. Nice to know digi that you work there.
I would recommed flstudio as well. or cake walk..talk about cheap and easy to use. also if you can get hold of (which you probably can because they are sold at most major book stores) computer music-the magazine. in it has a nice virtual studio that comes on every cd with the mag. I don't use their stuff but from what i hear their stuff is pretty good. they'll give you evertying snyths..sequencers,drum machines, samplers..all for free on the cd. i've played around with them to see what they were about and in essences they were pretty much cakewalk type interface ( or like acid in some respects). if you've used those then you'd understand how to use these.
hey and that's all free with the purchase of the mag-which will run you about 13 bucks (usa dollar)
