Hi,
I'm new here and in a rush to upgrade my Sony ECM-MS907 microphone that I have been using with my IRiver H140. It does a pretty good job, but now the cable is shot and I want something better. I have about $200 to spend. As I'm recording my jazz gigs with duo, quartet and big band, it needs to be fairly discreet (I can't have my laptop there or much gear).
Can someone point me in the right direction?
So far I'm considering the Sony ECM-MS957, and I've also thought of switching to a Zoom H4. The Zoom and the Iriver appear comparable, and choosing an external microphone is making the decision even more complicated.
Thanks in advance!
Hi there,
well it sounds as if the Zoom H2 can do the job. More informations here:

And how about getting some binaural microphones? The Soundman OKMs are brilliant and you can get a "Rock" version, if you want to record loud music.

I concur. The Zoom H2 is cheaper and in my mind easier to use. Unless you need phantom power and/or XLR inputs, I wouldn't bother with the H4. I have an iRiver H120 as well, but it is slowly dying on me.
The sony mics are pretty bad. (I use them all the time though) Use the built in mics in the Zoom until you can find a good combo. The suggestion by inchadney should not be overlooked. From what I've heard on-line and from other users is The OKM mics are wonderful.
I have an iHP-140. I put Rockbox software on it, and bought an AT822 stereo mic. Here is a page I wrote for the setup. There is a sample of the quality. If your iriver is on ok shape, you will be HAPPY.
