Cool edit, Acid Pro, Audiomulch, Granulab, E-mu 49 key USB midi, DSS1, several fractal composers, microphones, welders, lathes, Bridgeport mill, grinders, but my all time favorite butt kickin'est softsynth is Studiofactory, a very fine work in progress by a guy named Peter Wendrich at www.syntiac.com. Up to 250 modules per page, midi and joystick control. Reminds my of the Moog C I played in college, plus the Arp 2600, the Electrocomp 300 and 101, the VCS3 (a Putney, really), and my own MS20, all patched together... And Acid Pro work just like a huge multitrack deck, only I don't have to splice and keep all my tape strips in labeled comic book bags. Sweet!

My favorite tool is now a strangely tuned accoustic guitar with two slides in one hand and finger-piking in the other. I use a cheap used pair of auto--mechanics deep-sockets (5/8" aND 15mm but it doesn't matter too much) and flatwound strings with a cheap but low-noise Lawrence in hole pickup. It was $40 used and I'm happy enough with it.
I primarily use midi keyboard and a big mystery box full of noise commonly called a PC.
I wav edit with a magnifying glass tool in Wavestudio or Wavelablite that came with my M-audio/Creative audio PCI cards.
Any loop software such as Reason (from M-audio card) and CubaseLE or something like that from the Creative Audigy card purchase.
I like the Ableton Live I got with Maudio card but haven't used it much. It slow me down, no offense to many users of it; personal preference...
I use Garage Band and my voice for digital and guitar for analogic.
Only for private music, of course.
This weekend the weather is bad, sad and boring so I decided to amuse you with the inventory of the equipment that is living with me:
Mics:
- Shure SM57.
- Shure 16A.
- Sony ECM-F9 (cheap mic; less than 12 €).
- A plastic condenser mic ()of unknown mark that works when HE wants, good for takes with unexpected results. I don't know where is he now, probably is field-recording in nowhere land.
Hard & Software:
- A laptop PC with the serial soundcard.
- Korg D8. Digital multitrack recorder (8 tracks). It has good built-in effects and many times I use it as pre-amp before the signal inputs the PC.
- Cubase SX; Sound Forge 6.0; VST instruments ...
Instruments:
- MIJ Fender Stratocaster (1987).
- Epiphone acoustic guitar (1981).
- Spanish guitar.
- Peavey Electric Bass.
- Cheap electric guitar with MIDI pick up. A friend lent me the guitar for a weekend 25 years ago. I've tried to return it but ...
Guitar Amp:
- Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket (wooonderful).
Stuff to donate to a museum in the future:
- Tascam Portaestudio. 4 track analog recorder. Uses standard cassette.
- Roland SC-7 sound module (GM).
Wow, I didn't realize how rudimentary I was!
Software wise, I use Cacophony for editing waveform files. I used to use Audacity, but it's not been so happy on my computer for some reason; lots of crashes. Ableton Live for sequencing, playing around with effects, loops, etc. I've recently started using Pd (PureData) for sound manipulation - wish I could afford Reaktor!
Hardware wise, I use a PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 and a Behringer BCR2000. I'm investing in a Korg padKONTROL next. I have some Harmon-Kardon SoundSticks, or when my girlfriend is studying, Sony MDR-7506 headphones. I have a no-name electric guitar that I use for playing around with riffs and chord changes if I'm feeling less electro and more rock. I wish I was sophisticated enough to tell the difference between shitty and nice guitars.
My sound production is the ye olde makeshift method that was used for lots of sound effects in the sixties - get a household object and record something you do to it, (optional) electronically process it, show it to the world.
I also use my SoundBlaster Sound Card's builtin synth. I use NoteWorthy Composer, with is a nice sequencer that you don't need a degree in user interface design to understand. I use a trial version (shock-horror! TRIAL VERSION!) of GoldWave to process and record my sounds.
I use only sound files - found, recorded or created (try Coagula or Audiopaint) - no instruments what so ever, real or virtual - witch I edit - stretching, filtering, echoing, reverbing, compressing, limiting... - and mix together in Audition, accompanied with some plug-in effects – honourable mention Ambience and Izotope Ozone 3.
