Im trying to find software that allows me to import a song from a band and have that sound broken down into all its different components (like in CSI when they have all the different sound waves and can listen to each one individually).. not sure if this is possible so any suggestions would be helpful
not really possible. The best you can do is separate the sound into bands of frequencies, but even then you can't possibly get everything isolated. For example, if you isolate the low end of the spectrum, you'll obviously get the kick and bass, but you'll be missing some of both of those that resides up in the high-mids to highs, the resonance. You can experiment with filters to try and get the effect you want though.
often you can get pretty close to that using a software like AudioSculpt (Mac)
http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.php/lang/en/id/2091/
or Algorithmix ReNOVAtor (PC)...
It gives you an FFT Analysis of the Music / Sound your are processing and then (simplified explanation) you can use Tools similar to the ones in Photoshop to graphically eliminate unwated frequency bands or only portions of unwanted frequencies.
Don't be mistaken though, this is a LOT of work, even with these programs. Therefore it is rather used as a last resort after everything else failed, i.e. to remove unwanted signals from film recordings etc. not to produce Karaoke CD's
cheers.
