I need a series of different spaceship flying sounds for an animation I'm working on. I'm not exactly looking for perfection (it's just a Flash movie after all), but it should at least sound good.
I've recorded some vacuum cleaner noise and some airplane noise (both of which I just uploaded). I can mix those with buzzing or synthesized sounds and create sounds for different ships, which work for basic shots of a ship/fighter flying. The problem is that it doesn't really work for shots of flyby's or anything exciting.
I thought of using Audacity's time track feature to add a Doppler effect, but that didn't really have the effect I was looking for. I'm considering mixing in clips of formula one cars driving by, if I can find more of them.
Anyway, I was hoping for some of the thoughts and suggestions of anyone else here. (Or, if someone knows of some already-made effects I could use, that would be great.)
What I'd do is look for F-104 clips. (The F-104 is actually called the "Starfighter," too!) Seriously, at certain throttle settings the F-104 makes this really cool howling noise. In this YouTube clip, you can hear it a couple of times, starting at about 2:31 and again at 3:08, 3:16, and a real quick one at 3:41:
