one failing of my RC09 I feel is the LCD in bright light ( read daylight ) i don't know is it my unit?
so this a totally different kettle of (digi)fish to the rc09 - which has (kindly put) average pre-amps?
I am feeling gear lust when I look at it.....
how u feel it is for film production sound?
looking forward to your post!

nice! im drooling digifish!
i had the pleasure of using the r-4 last week, and was pretty impressed with it.
i noticed though that the new r-44 does not have the same selector for line-level or mic-level switch, located just below the analog input terminals, as the r-4.
i was planning on interfacing a sound devices 442 mixer on the r-44 to hopefully further improve the quality and versatility. is this advisable, or is it good enough as direct connection?
thanks!

Hi Mark,
the R44 has a variable (9 step?) sensitivity adjustment from Line to Mic levels (outer ring on the front 4 knobs) and then a trim for each level (inner ring). Whether or not the internal mic-pres are good enough will depend on the mic and sound you are recording. I am really not sure at the moment how the internal mic-pres compare to a Sound Devices MixPre that I have been using. I have been experimenting (one evening only so far) and think the main differences come at the upper end of the gain, MixPre is quieter. But I plan do do some objective comparisons soon...stay tuned...

I paid $CAN 1850 for my (Version 1) R4 and have never regretted it. The preamps are a little weak, but still totally useable. (They're a little noisy with moderate gain) I typically use only 2 channels for environment sounds, but I have done a few 4 track nature recordings.
I may go and have a look at the R44, my R4 is getting a little old. Pretty cool you can chain them together. Even though SD has no moving parts, I do enjoy the R4 harddrive because I ocassionally do all evening musical projects on it. Handy to not have to worry about media swap.
Also love the trim situation that digi describes. Thats a wicked addition.
Has anyone run this on batteries yet? How long do they last?

Worst case scenario -
2 hours 57 mins
Ni-MH batteries
recording 4 mono tracks at 16/44.1
four phantoms on
display on,
buttons on dim,
illumination off.

This file comes from "Ozpeter" at --> http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,103270.30.html
He notes
"The original was 44.1kHz, 16 bits, preamp level -38dB, input level 0dB (12 o'clock position of the fader knob).
The music was recorded on location, and the following 'silence' in a recording studio, same mics, same levels."
