I know this isn't exactly helpful, but I remember having some trouble with Audacity, and it has to do with the way that Audacity "grabs" the audio interface in a strange way. I think you can open Audacity first, then other audio programs and it will be OK, but I don't remember...haha

you need to provide more details if you want help. Are you on a linux machine? which distro? do you have problems only with audacity? what is the problem?
Okay. Firstly my laptop is on Vista (although I've been tempted to install XP, because Vista seems to hate wireless connectivity). I'm using a Line 6 UX1, and the version of Audacity is 1.3 Beta. Audacity seems to only see it as a means to send audio out rather than to receive sounds from. Also, any chat thing like Google Talk, Microsoft thingy doesn't work. Plus the Real Player and Windows Media programs won't even start to work while it is plugged in.
I bet it's something so obvious, but I'm not amazingly technically minded. I'm trying to make it easier to record musical instruments and vocal ideas both for my band, and for those on here asking for anything. I am a musician who plays a wide variety of instruments, and thought it would be more helpful and cheaper than having to wait to go into a professional studio or use lesser equipment, which means worse quality.

I don't get it, you have problems when the ux1 is plugged in? or only if audacity is on?
Also, have you played with the configurations? it's in the menu "edit/preferences"
In any case: drivers drivers drivers (sound drivers, ux drivers)
if it's audacity's fault, I suppose you're better off asking in their forums http://audacityteam.org/forum/
