Hi, I am using REAPER and I was wonderong -- which is the best vst sampler to use? One that I can trigger samples using my MIDI keyboard.
Thank you.
Let me be a bit more specific and say that I want one that is free or extremely inexpensive. I found HALion and VSampler etc. and they are like $300. I can't afford that!
I use Kontakt, but that's $399. Personally I think it's totally worth the price, but it definitely is costly. Battery ($299) is another good choice (and also made by Native Instruments), but it's more geared towards percussion, and is also expensive
I did a quick search and found this: http://www.vstcentral.com/plugins.aspx?mode=1&search=sampler&perPage=160
Dunno if any of those are any good, but it's a pretty hefty list. Also, you can get a copy of this:

if you buy a copy of Computer Music magazine (which runs about $15 an issue...Barnes and Noble should stock it). They usually include a sample dvd with a bunch of their vst instruments with every copy of their magazine (which is decent). You might also be able to find a copy of it online...I don't know whether it's technically freeware or not, but it seems like it should be.
Hope this helps.

your best bet to a free vst sampler is to build your own sound font file with all the notes to different loops. Other than that battery is the shit. It is geared twords percussion but KONTAKT is sweet to especially if you get the Sonic Couture Scriptorium. I think theres an Akai S2000 vsti as well but I dont exactly know where. . . . .
I've been using battery for a long time.
It's a great piece of software once you get to know how to use it. The latest incarnations are especially good.
Shortcircuit is good and free. You can get it here: http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php
UncleSigmundvery promising, thanks.

Agreed. I even bought this one once it wasn't freeware yet.
