im trying to use audacity to record the sound from a youtube video, but it only comes in on the Left audio input. im using my computors stock sound card (realtek...sorry, i dont know the model number). to record i need to hook my line out to either my line in or my mic line (tried both). any suggestions?
In Audacity go to Edit->Preferences, then in the Audio I/O tab, next to "Channels:" If it is set to stereo, change it to mono. The vast majority if not almost all YouTube videos have mono audio so this shouldn't make a difference in audio quality, but if it records to a mono file, it should play back using both left and right. As for why it's only recording the left channel, are you sure the cable you're using to connect the line out and line in is a stereo cable?
the cable might be the problem..i have no clue if it is, its a double male sided cable that i used to hook up some cheepie speakers to my computor. any way to tell if a cable is stereo or not?
Why you don't try to download the video (e.g. with Orbit, http://dl.orbitdownloader.com/dl/OrbitDownloaderSetup.exe, or with get2pc) and convert it to an editable format (e.g. with Super, http://www.erightsoft.org/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe)? Then you will easily extract the audio (e.g. with GoldWave)...
Bye!
Audacity Also has a cool feature in the top right hand corner where instead of recording your line in you record whats on stereo "Stereo Mix" and set the stereo channels play the vid and thats it. No cables or anything strange like that. Super Simple

Actually this is not Audacity dependent but sound card dependent. Some cheaper audio cards don't have this option, as my Dell Inspiron 1520 notebook shows.
