depends what you want to do

for field recording you need a mic, recorder and headphones. Which mic and which recorder depends on what you want to record. Birdsong, urban street sounds and an orchestra all need a different type of mic.

for sound synthesis you need software

for both you need imagination

I'm new, too. At least in recording sounds and uploading them. I love field recordings. So I bought a Zoom H2 to record the sounds around me, and I am very pleased with the results.

As Ermine mentioned: it all depends on what you want!
