Why has no one mentioned the Tascam DR-05? Excellent results for €100. Very high quality gear.
I use the Guitar to USB Interface Link Cable-PC / Mac Recording.

Zoom H1 is very nice, and price is right.
I made a shock mound for it since the "hand noise" is really bad, and the recorder has a plastic thread (1/4" x 20) for tripod mount---
my shock-mount holds the H1 with 3 rubber o-rings, and aluminum suspension frame has 1/4" x 20, ALL steel insert for tripod.I'm anxious to do more tests with it.
Seconded - if you can work round the handling noise it's more than decent. Coincident stereo is always a blast! I bought mine as a line-level recorder which it does excellently, better and cheaper than some rack units.
Hi guys, any recommendations for gear below £100. For a long time I was set on a Zoom H4N and Rode shotgun mic then realised, especially for recording natural sounds, I don't need 4, 6, 8+ tracks. I need high quality audio.
This to me suggests at least:
Zoom H1
Tascam DR-05
Tascam DR-07
Olympus LS-10
Zoom H2N
Tascam DR-22
The main reason I didn't go for an H4N is many reviews about the cumbersome interface and unintuitive menus.
If anyone would recommend anything specific, please do let me know. The review links in the beginning of this post are 6 years old now and your experience and advice would be much appreciated.
The Tascam DR-05 has good built-in mics, a whole lot better at least than my smaller Olympus recorders. I like my Olympus DM-620, mainly because its pocketable, though the built-in mics are not so great. Not good on the low end. The DM-620 has 3 built-in mics. The middle mic is more directional, and you can set the balance of this mic vs. the stereo mics, thereby narrowing the stereo field.
I just bought a Zoom H6! Rode shotgun mic and here we go..
The tascam dr100mkii is super tight! i've had mine for a few years now and it works wonderfully. it's price is comparable to the h4n. super high quality recordings n whatnot. a leetle pricey if yr on a super budget but the built-in mics are pretty great for capturing a large variety of sounds. although its not particularly great for long-distance recording tbh

Bram, thanks for sharing it with us its very usefull! I really need to save some money now because I have some issues with my health and the hgh pharmacy are getting out of me the very last penny. but there's nothing better than music in the end...

Hello everybody. I am here seeking for advice from possibly more advanced users. I am a student at home, and spending money is often a one way flow, so after a lot of waiting, I managed to find a Tascam DR-05 for a great deal about fifty dollars (or $40 american). After recording various sounds for various projects, I am more than happy about it.
However, I have been wondering, since four months of the year here are around (or way under) zero degrees Celsius, what should I do to record sound out in the cold (for example, ski folly sounds, or icicle rings.. etc). I really don't want to degrade or even worst, break the device due to cold. I am aware about condensation issues due to rapid temp changes, and issues caused by water that could enter the device. But say I mostly protect it from these elements, what do I have to fear from 0 to -15 or -30 degrees Celsius?

Hi Sojan,
With your recorder into the cold is no problem. Your recorder works up to -40c following specifications.
There is a risk of reheating the device. So if you return to room temperature again fast. Then moisture goes down and in your recorder.
Prevent rapid temperature changes from cold to hot.
Let your recorder warm up slowly. Put the recorder in a well-closed insulation bag before you go out of the cold into the warm. If the bag is not closed properly, the warm air condenses on your recorder. That’s the risc. Allow the recorder to come to room temperature so slowly (hours).
What I do. I first put my equipment-bag in the cold garage, then in the cool hallway. Only then will I bring the equipment into the room. I never have problems.
I hope that others will also have tips.

Thank you very much for your experience! May I ask (just for reference), what is the coldest weather you have had to record in?
PS, the minimum temperature for this unit is 0 Celcius, not forty. I got confused at first too because they use a - to represent "to". So it does 0-40C, which looks like negative forty, but it makes no sense that the highest temperature would be zero. Also, the Fahrenheit temperatures are 32-104, wich would be 32-40 if it were negative.
Indeed I was wrong. The specs say 0-40c.
I have a Tascam 100 and it works fine at -10c. I do not know what the mics will do under -0c.
I think, when the air is dry, your mics will work fine.
The only way to know is by trying. I never had a mic that brook down after cold recordings.
I hope others will give more input.

Tascam DR-100MK3 user here. Used it in cold weather a lot of times. The cold only effects the LCD screen in a negative way. It will have reduced refresh rate and responsiveness, like really slow if it's below zero celcius degrees.
I also tried to use it with 256GB sd card. I was hoping that it could support that. Because even though manufacturers state a limits, they are sometimes artificial and shows only what is officially tested and supported. For instance many android phones support greater sd cards than their manufacturer states in the spec sheets.
But I think Tascam has but an actual artificial limitation on purpose. And the device refuses to work with anything over 128GB. It asks you to change the card. This could be a "strategic greediness" 
to force more professional users buy their top tier recorders.
I am a simple layman, with a good ear, btw, and I've always loved capturing this and that my whole life. This is my question to you experts: Does not the microphone on my iPhone X suffice, or is there a real noticeable difference, overlooking the obvious please? Thanks for your input
