Hi everybody, Ive just started work creating sounds for a horror film and have the task of recording/creating the sound for someone's tongue being cut off! The problem is i'm a little stuck on what to use for the sound of the tongue being cut! I was thinking of maybe cutting through some kind of meat or something, but i need the sound to be 'over the top' and didn't think meat would be squelchy enough! If anyone has any suggestions/ideas or if anyone has previous tongue cutting experience, id be really happy to hear from you!
Thanks,
Tom
You could try slowly squeezing spit through your teeth, it gives a nice squishy sound which should work. Maybe add some more similar sounds, like running your finger through some sticky, thick liquid, like some types of glue. Additionally, you could try cutting a piece of cloth with a sharp knife, to get that fiber-ripping experience.
may i ask what movie it is? is it at all public eye? any chance we are going to be able to see the fruits of your hard sampling.
cut your own out and record and we'll see.

For a live tongue cut I would actually do whatever your doing close to your mouth to get the breathing down. Or to be as easy as possible buy a cow tongue or pig tongue from your nearest butcher or Asian market and cut it. Put the cow tongue in your mouth, put the recorder up to your face and cut. Enjoy the moment too. It's sounds super sexy.
cheers guys! not to sure about putting a dead animals tongue in my mouth but we must suffer for our art! The film is the third part of a trilogy of short horror films called bordello death tales! unfortunately the trailer has been removed from youtube for some reason! But check out http://www.amberpictures.co.uk/ for info on the trilogy and other films by the same director! once again cheers for the help much appreciated!

Here in the US there are these icky eyeball toys/novelties that are bloodshot eyeballs surrounded by a bloodlike thin fluid and all wrapped in a tough see-through rubber. They are specifically meant to be squished in one's hand to make the most icky, gross squishing sounds. It might be too, uh, gastro-intestinal for your purposes if used too vigorously, but it's a GREAT sound source for even small little squishes and such.
Definitely layer it with the sound of cutting something fibrous, like a real tongue or an overcooked chicken breast, especially if the action is slow. Cinema cliché's suggest that a fast cut make a "shiiiing" sound (the blade, ostensibly)...you might find that will be unrealistic but satisfying and help sell the effect, especially based on how much/little of the action the viewer sees.
Hope this helps,
