Hi,
I was wondering what software (free preferably) one can use to create creepy ambient noise for a horror/suspense film. Also how is it done exactly- by modifying an existing sound file in a program? For example, I'd like to make a creepy ambient sound coming from a corridor- something that could be wind or a fan, but more... creepy.
Thanks for the help!
Well, any processing you do will need the right kind of source...in terms of source, you can always go to the horror movie staples of the waterphone and the bowed cymbal (search here or Google for more), but anything with aggressive, modulated, atonal pitch might work. However, using spectral convolution processing such as impemented by Sound Hack, Michael Norris' realtime AU plugins, and the insane Gleetchlab on these sources - or even human screams or animal howls - will get darned creepy really fast and if done right can sound pretty unique (done poorly it all sounds like mid-90's Metasynth freakouts). It'll take some knob-twiddling but I've had some really unnerving results from convolving a bowed cymbal with a cat's meow. Yikes...
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. I should mention though that I'm seeking something more realistic- nothing electronic or even "artificial" sounding. Like a wind from a tunnel- something that sounds realistic but, if used in the right setting, could be considered creepy.
Here are a couple of mine that you might consider???
