well, i did it again. left AA batteries in my H4 for .... how long? Too long. Luckily when I opened up the case the corrosion was slight but both batteries had significant leakage. Close call. If your equipment's been sitting around for a long time with batteries in it, words to the wise. Check the batteries.
my h5 can also be operated by my solar power pack http://images.biltema.com/PAXToImageService.svc/product/large/2000035853 (that i always bear in my backpack even if i've forgotten batteries) dunno if this also applies for the h4n though

This is a really good idea. One problem for me though is that I live in the UK.
Question: does this solar panel work at all when it's cloudy? (which is most of the time here).

I think that the solar charging on small devices like usb battery packs is more like a gimmick than it is a real world function.
But as far as battery packs go - I use a zoom h6 with a 5200mAh usb pack. I leave the AA eneloops in for the backup (if the usb pack runs out). That way I can use the recorder with multiple phantom mics for hours and hours and hours and I don't have to worry about batteries.
