Thanks for the new input you guys. It seem like a good time to hold tight for a few months... very curious about the Sony (seems recording quality on the Olympus LS-11 won't be different from LS-10).

I may try that Edirol first though. I've been somewhat unsatisfied with the LS-10 quality (too trebly, hiss in quiet situations, too much digital artifacting even at 96/24 PCM, though I think that may be inescapable with these digitals?).

Good question... I also can't tell if that means "improved" by comparison to the LS-10, or what.

for audio quality go for Sony PCM-D50.
for size go for Olympus LS-10.

I wonder on what basis you make that claim? The Sony has slightly better EIN but this is hardy enough to matter in all but the most stringent uses. And in those cases you should be using external mics and maybe external preamps.

To the OP: I hope you enjoy the LS-10. To reduce wind noise customise a dead cat or buy the one that is available specifically for the unit. To reduce handling noise do not change record level settings when in use and move carefully. Either that or use external mics. Your concerns about directionality etc. are also best answered by way of an appropriate external microphone.

I used Marantz PMD 620, and believe it's better due to portability and perfect recording features.. though the battery in olympius is better
