Hey guys,
For a friend whose birthday it is today we wanted to buy a recorder. She does a lot of interviews and is currently using a pretty bad "voice recorder". We're looking at things of max 250 euros, something small and light, preferably battery powered (not built-in batteries).
I considered the H2, but now I'm reading everywhere that the handling noise is really, really bad, which seems to me that it's definitely not a good contender for a handheld interview recorder.
Any suggestions?
- Bram
I doubt if it is any worse than anything else.
"A friend of mine has a Sony PCM-D50 and claims that the handling noise is as bad as the Zoom H2 (which he borrowed before purchasing the Sony) and that wind noise is significantly worse in the more expensive machine. However the on-board mics or / and the pre-amp are better in the Sony.
Hope this helps."

Listen to this unprocessed handheld Zoom H2 recording http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=66631
Whichever recorder you will get her, she will not have to move it at all if it is a stereo setup. Just hold steadily or prefferably sit it on a table mid way between the interviewer and interviewee and off to the side to pick up both perfectly.

A model that can be same quality is the EDIROL-R09.

About the noise I get no problem for near source noise
like for instance someone that talk in front
so you got no real problem for interview.
But there is always a noise, we talk around -43dB in the resulting wave file.
but for far source of noise you must turn up
the pre-amp gain and that pre-amplifier is very horrible
so you must use an external pre-amp and a better mic
and the problem is less problematic.
