I would prefer you list mac apps capable of this.
CyberiaLainKittyKat
Kontakt - NI is AMAZING,you mean synthesize correct, not loop?
Oh man, 400 dollars... it looks really good though.
Is audacity the best free one?
Hello ShnitzelKiller,
Audacity is a free Waveeditor, which means, you can edit your Music and other Audio with it. As far as i know, you can synthesize (generate) simple sounds with it too, but for easier use, i would prefer a real Synthesizer (Software or Hardware).
I know a small synthesizer (available for Mac OS too), which is able to generate some nice sounds and is based on NI Technology.
It's the Freeware Soundforum Synth, which can be downloaded here:
http://www1.keyboards.de/soundforum.htm don't worry, the Synth is in english, but the download page is in german, sorry.
You need this file (for Mac): http://www1.keyboards.de/soundforum/soundforumsynth102.sit
If you want the current (never) version of the synth, then please download this one:
http://www.native-instruments.de/newsoundschool.info
You need this for the download:
Username: soundforum@keyboards.de
Passwort: soundschool
It's a free synth, so don't worry.
If you have problems using the first one, i can explain you, how it works (or translate the help file roughly from german to english) - you can edit the knobs and buttons with your Mouse and play notes with the PC-Keyboard (yxcvbnm and qwertzu are the two Octaves) .
There is no "record to wav/aif"-function in this synth - that means, you can not record the audio output with it - but there are free programs, that sould be able to record Computer-internally what the Soundforum Synth generates as an output.
Good luck,
.Ingo.
EDIT: you'll need this files too: http://www.seele07.de/musik/sfsynth.zip - they are preset files for the Soundforum Synth, so that you can hear, what's possible to create with it and so on. The Soundforum Synth was created for a Sounddesign Course, which is available in book form at wizoo books.

Thanks for the help, but the first thing I saw when I followed your link was "Nur Power PC, kein Intel". Darn, I have an Intel mac. So Right now the only software I can use is Audacity and Wavepad (looks nicer and has a better interface, but not actually as advanced as Audacity). I just wish Audacity didn't have that buggy classic interface.
Hmm ,what about this Synth? -> http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/
You'll need a VST-Host Software (like Cubase and so on) for that Synth, i guess.
If that is not what you are looking for, then my suggestion is, to try the following search words in Google:
"Softsynth standallone download free Intel Mac" or "Softsynth download free Intel Mac" and so on...
Soundfull Greetings,
.Ingo.
