I have been meaning to link to this hidden pad in the NT4 cable for ages. Here it is finally.
https://pantherfile.uwm.edu/type/www/audio-reports/Rode_NT-4_Cable_Mod/NT-4_CableMod-index.htm
The mod is probably of most interest to field-recordists.All my NT4 field-recordings are done with the modified cable.
Thanks!
.....would this partly explain the poor signal-to-noise ratio with this mini-jack cable into the R09HR(mic in)?...i am now using the XLR cable into the H4 which seems to work ok.
When is this pad useful? :?

Probably, I could do a comparison file with the mod cable and the pad cable if you like as I have both.
When is this pad useful?
The only reason I can think of is recording very loud sources to prevent clipping. Perhaps someone could enlighten us. I have been meaning to contact Rode but never got around to it.
It looks like this
