I just picked up a second-hand Sony TCD-D8 for cheap and am looking for a decent microphone (and preamp). I'm going to be using it indoors a lot, but also outside so I need something versatile. My budget is less than $300, so anything that I could find on eBay is good.
Thanks for your help.
SM57s and 58s (by Shure) are a safe bet. They are affordable and reliable dynamic mics.
As far as preamps go...you're only going to need one that will cleanly increase the volume and maybe add some nice color to the sound. Solid state is cheapest but you can also get a decent tube pre by Bellari for $60-70 used (the MP105). This one is suited best for vocals. You can always get a better tube later if you want, and there's even some mods out there on the interwebs. Another popular tube pre is the Art MP...I've never owned one myself but like I said...they're popular. And very cheap! You can get those for $50 new.
My recommendation would be to get your mics first, try out the built-in pres on what you're using to record, and then go from there.
Remember too that XLR jacks/cables will always sound less noisy than using 1/4" jacks for mics.

audio technica at-2020 is a very affordable condensor mic, sounds pretty good...
you can get them new for $100, needs phantom power though...

i bought that one two weeks ago, and i'm really really happy with it!
Costed me 99 euro's, and it sounds awesome. Nice bass-response aswell!
If $100 is cheap, I just got a Behringer B1 for $100 new and a MIC200 Tube Preamp on Ebay for $40 almost brand new and some of the results can be heard in my sample pack of microphone tests...

I am very satisfied and I have not really got into tweaking the settings. I bought a UB802 also for around $50, I use the EQ and the invisible pre's on it to compare to the Tube sound from the MIC200... Listen for yourself... after using dynamic mics and cheesy radio shack mics for years it is a dramiatic difference... So much less digital fiddling with the signal. You can hear the results on some of my chords here:

I started the pack with my old mic an no preamp. Added one or two with the tube preamp and the new mic and recorded the rest direct...
