Hi All,
I'm doing a selection of outdoor field recordings in the near future using an Edirol R4 with a blimped Rode NT4, but am also going to be taking a Zoom Q3 as a video reference / documentation device, however the supplied foam windshield isn't great and I was wondering if anyone has used a Rode DeadKitten (or other similar windshield) with it, or if this is simply not going to fit?
thanks,
george
Hi,
I have just checked the Zoom Q3 dimensions and it is similar to the H2. The Dead Kitten fits the H2 well ( it has an elasticated opening ) so I should think that it would be suitable.
Hope this helps.
Ben
Cheers Ben; it's not a huge expense buying the kitten, but I'd rather not have to order it then return it later - thanks for the info!
cheers,
george
There are many videos on making your own dead cat on youtube.com
There is one dealing with the H3 mic you have and one on making your own blimp for the H3. All you need to make a dead cat is some fake fir and some elastic and a needle and thread or a sewing machine.
Just search for how to make a dead cat or how to make a mic blimp.
Thanks again - used the dead kitten - got some unexpectedly nice results.
mr16ga: If I was doing this again I would totally make a DIY windshield, mostly so that the hair could be more easily kept out of the lens. But time was of the essence, plus you have to factor in my complete lack of sewing skills and that I didn't want to end up with something that didn't work in the field.
cheers,
george
George
nice to see it worked out.
Sewing is not that hard just poke the needle in and pull it through. All the stitching is going to be hid by the fake fir. give it a try.
One thing about sewing since it is a mostly a female thing hanging out is a sewing shop is a nice way to meet women. Knitting is a chick magnet, I suppose sewing would be as well.
check this video out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmX3nbD8XJ4 it is funny and informative.
This is how I built my blimp with a homemake dead cat.
Just thinking about it I suppose you could get a fake boa from a craft store then just wrap the whole thing in the boa.
