I figured I would start a thread for people to post cool free VST plug-ins that they like(i didn't see an existing thread for this; if i overlooked one I apologize). The suggestions don't have to be limited to VST; they can be stand alone too....just free and useful. On that note, let me start by suggesting "Delay Lama". It is a very cool vowel-synth with an even cooler animated interface...check it out! :!:
I don't own any sequencer software, and haven't gotten a decent VST host until recently so I don't have much experience with this.
Still, Crystal looks pretty freaking awesome.
Also, this article suggests some free VSTis for making spacesynth music:
http://www.spacesynth.net/Article/Tutorial2-FreeSynths
i like both of the above and have tried most free vst's for OS9 /OSX
but always came back to smartelectronix ....
now im all 'universal binary' so hats off to Alphakanal for Automat and Greenoak for Crystal for givin me something to friggin go on!
the most useful would be a classy compressor but these have always been few and far between for free appleware.
an honorable mention though, should go to the apple au filters in particular for being handy workwhoreses too. ive always been one for a freindly GUI but when there's nothing in the cupboard you realise the value of the stuff they just fling in there. having said that, there really is no excuse for calling logic's compressor a compressor...why dont we make this thread about the worst and the most wanted too?
favorite vsts...
crazy ivan, but I'd hardly recommend it to anyone.
I would recommend...
1. start with vsthost, chainer, or some simple host, or with your favorite vst-hosting program. Don't start with a big, complicated host you're not familiar with.
2. figure out a system for cataloging/naming them - authors often don't do a good job of tracking versions
3. download anything that sounds the least bit interesting - to a temporary folder.
4. move them into your real vst folder one at a time. If it crashes, check the faq, etc. if you can't make it run, delete it and move on.
5. Play with it. If you hate it, delete it. If you don't get it, leave it and move on to the next. At some point, you'll either get it or be tired of it.
6. Don't be afraid to delete them. You can always download another copy, and there's too many of them anyways. How many compressors(3 or monosynths(25) do you need? Just don't delete your settings if you love them - but if you love it, you're not deleting it, right?
7. continue making music with what you have - you will eventually collect a set of tools that works for you, no matter how cool someone else says something else is.
These imitate the traditional Chinese instruments dizi (a flute) and erhu (a kind of two-stringed violin.) They sound really convincing and wonderful.

i went through the 'audacity vst site' and downloaded a bunch of freebies...
personally, i like the "minimogue " , "arp2600" and something called a "gtg kwop7" (which kind of resembles a roland juno synth)
i'm into oldschool analogs...
i've owned all the previous synths before, as well as others, and these get pretty close, for being digitals, you gotta play with the presets though depending on how exact you want your sounds to be, but they sound decent overall...

i am looking for a freeware string and symphonic orchestra vst though, something that kind of sounds realistic, not an arp or synth string...
if anybody has any links or suggestions that would be cool...
ooh, here are some good ones, yes. i was wondering if anyone had any drum vst's they would recommend...i've found a few, but want one that sounds real!
it doesn't work

Try SFZ its basically a soundfont player, which means you can use some very very convincing samples as instruments, and the majority of soundfonts are free, also if you get Vienna soundfont studio you can create your own soundfonts, i dont know if anyone is familiar with soundfonts but basically they are samples that are mapped over a midi keyboard, so for instance if you take a piano sample and map it over two octaves the program(Vienna Soundfont Studio) will adjust the pitch of the sample accordingly, i have'nt gotten into making my own soundfonts yet, but i plan to soon, not just instruments either, you can map whole drum kits, even songs can be split up and the different parts can be placed on different keys, i would definitely recomend trying both of these.

If you like retro, 8-bit sounds then check out Tweakbench's site. I use their vst's for making video-game songs. Check out Peach, Toad, Triforce, and Tapeworm for sure.
tweakbench.com
Some pretty cool stuff!
Tweakbench is really cpu hungary.....their filters are pretty good though...
my suggestions:
morpheus: a Fm synth-sampler/vocoder type thing
Synth1: Nord Lead emulator that sounds pretty good
Orange Vocoder: Not free, but really cool.
there's a lot cool freebies out there, cygnus is one:
http://www.krakli.co.uk/cygnus.htm
purfect for cosmic textures and sci-fi ambiences!
i like the creative interface as well (stars replace knob and sliders, sun replace master volume...)
but if you prefer a more ergonomics and functional graphics, theres' also a conventional GUI available
MrRay, a fabulous Rhodes http://www.soundfonts.it/?a=read&b=18
..MrTramp is also a great wurlitzer
the same (very talented) developer relased also a convincing trumpet and sax emulation
a few cool effects i like much are .. dblue Glitch http://illformed.org/glitch/?page=downloads
and livecut http://mdsp.smartelectronix.com/2005/07/livecut.php
but ... there's too many to mention
my first post! I would like to say HELLO to all!
the full package of Madtracker comes with a dozen or so nice vst plugs
also in there a decent drumsynther, Drumatic
But I do find myself using SR-202 ,working around bugs
in the software
tweakbench, yeah... TB 's yoink is fun
thanks djemboy2
for suggesting sfz
