Hi everyone!
I tested R-09 today and was really shocked by the hiss... I was going to buy it for recording atmos and effects, but it was way too noisy for professional use. However, I didn't have a change to test it with good external mic.
So, has anyone of you used R-09 with good condenser mic? Should I blame the built-in mics or the preamps for the noise?
over all I'm pretty happy with the R09, the mics are roughly what you'd expect for this type of product but better then terrible
the diffiuculty I've experienced was a consitant hiss when plugged into line current . . . I haven't finished tests on this but it initially appears to be consistent to machine, independent of specific circuit
will try to post some noise profiles in next day or so . . . when I get done exploring a little more
even on batt's it is not absolutely 'quiet' but to tell you the truth I wouldn't expect it to be and the mic's are sensitive enough that location & position do make a difference as to how much unwanted ambience is included -- used it during an adolescent piano recital rehersal and first mic (internals) placement included far too much fabric sliding on bench . . . a subsequent adjustment reduced this significantly
used it for a stero reference mix line in out of a board, with line current attached (for rather obvious reasons) at a concert of pretty straight forward blues/rock material and did not notice the 'hiss' to be objectionable . . . but room 'self' noise was pretty significant
the hiss only became objectionable in quieter environments with acoustic instruments, and seems to be a function of power . . . reduced when using batts

All the sounds I have uploaded so far are recorded on the an Edirol R-09 with the internal mics. Yes there is a bit of hiss from the internal mic preamps, this is particularly so for the high gain setting for low-level ambient sounds.
For louder sounds there is no problem with the self noise.
The factory does not recommend using the mains power when making mic recordings BTW.
The line in is quite clean, so if you already have a mic preamp and external mics then it's another world compared to the internal mic pre-amp and mics, there is very little self-noise using the line-in.
To put this another way, using the 24 bit mode is a waste of time with the internal mics for ambient sounds (in high-gain mode), however feed the R-09 a line-level signal or a decently (externally) pre-amped external mic and it's another story.

I am thinking about ot replace my existing device, which can be seen here:

with the Edirol R-09. Due to my existing Preamp I just need line-in. Would this be a good idea?

This would work very well. The self noise from the R-09 is very low. It's the internal mics that are a bit hissy, the line-in d/a and mic preamp are good.
